#ArtsPH - What Happened To The 1st Palawan International Film Festival & Media Arts Expo?

The first Palawan International Film Festival and Media Arts Expo (#PIFFmax) held last April 27 to May 1, 2018 at GaStationPH, Long Beach, San Vicente, Palawan was a huge success. Nested at the longest white beach in the Philippines, covering 14.5 kilometers, the event become a haven for film makers, music savy individuals, arts enthusiasts and travelers.

Different volunteers around the globe lend a hand to put everything in place. From the cozy lounge facing the beach to the comfort rooms built with bidet and shower area, GaStationPH become an instant home for everyone.

The Palawan International Festival aims to showcase films with positive values and this year, they screened films about the environment and gender sensitive related plots. Joining the long list of this year's #PIIFFmax are Zig Dulay's Paglipay, Joselito Altajeros' Kasal, Auraeus Toletino's Pisay, Grave Bandits by Ty Acierto, Bar Boys by Kip Oebanda, Maestra by Lem Lorca, Elwood Perez' Pacita M. and a lot more. Ploning, which is directed by Dante Nico Garcia, closes the film festival as it celebrates it's 10th year after release.

#PIFFmax also hosted a short film competition and presented 13 entries during the entire festival. The five (5) finalists are as follows:
1. Binhi ni Lakapati - Maiqui Therese D. Tolentino
2. Msista - Ian Isaboke
3. Siyudad sa Bulawan (City of Gold) - Jarell Mahinay Serencio
4. Himurasak(A Harvest of Souls) – FrancisRaphael Solajes
5. Atmeneti - FrancisRaphael Solajes, Tareck Raffoul, Vera Gaszner, Svitlana Shymko, Arun Bhattarai

Winning fifty thousand pesos (Php 50, 000) from Palawan Council for Sustainable Development and a special trophy created by mixed media artist Nuno Finez is Siyudad sa Bulawan (City of Gold) directed by Jarrel Mahinay Serencio. Ma. Christina Rodriguez, Project Development Officer III & Chief, ECAN Education & Extension Division PCSDA handed the award. Special citation (Gender Sensitivity Special Citation Award) has been given to Juan Pablo Pineda III's Pua Iyam.

May 1 is dedicated to a music concert featuring bands and DJs. An art exhibition entitled "Noah's Art" is also on display and participants can buy an item for a good cause. Booths featuring local businesses such as scented oils for air humidifier, massage oils, organic balms, Palawenyo bracelets and other charms.

Next year, Dante Nico Garcia, festival director and the vision behind PIFFmax, hopes more people would come to celebrate the colorful hues of film and other media. The organizing team is planning to have a full length film competition in 2019. PIFFMax 2019 will happen at April 27 to April 30.
