“Katips: Mga Bagong Katipunero” was originally performed onstage in the year 2016; winning the ALIW Awards for Best Musical Performance that year, Atty. Vince M. Tañada, the producer, writer and director, believes that sharing the story of students fighting for freedom in the middle of a force too big for them to control would be a timely metaphorical representation about our society today as we fight against the menace that continues to eat at our freedom as human beings.
Producing this film under Philstager's Films aims to magnify one of their most successful musicals into the big screen. I was lucky enough to watch it's initial render last November 27 together with other members of the press and I am sharing you three (3) scenes that became my instant favorite. This might be a spoiler for some so skip this if you don't want to be spoiled.
1. I shared this during the talkback that the "I AM ME" production was an instant hit. The scene starred Jerome Ponce and Nicole Laurel Asensio being intimate. This is also the first downtime coming from loud musical score due to war games that shows battle between the government and the activists. Nicole Laurel Asensio was so much fun to watch given an exceptional chemistry between her and Jerome. I asked her as well what are their preparations and if they undergone series of workshops but was surprised that they don't have the luxury of time to have that prior their filming. It was truly a magical scene. The chemistry transcends and will make you feel the love between their characters.
2. The scene where the four (4) love teams performed "Sa Gitna Ng Gulo". I love how it was connected and integrated. It flawlessly shows how the loveteams are interconnected even though they are 4 different couples in 4 different environments. The editing and shots were exceptional.
3. The torture scene. It was very graphic to the point that you don't want to watch it anymore. That means it's very effective. I watched other gore films and Katips really executed this one with integrity and appropriateness. It is very close with the depiction of how victims under the Martial Law era described their experience.
Katips follows the struggles, heartaches, pain and the brutal realism of what transpired during the young activists’ fight against oppression and for freedom from 1971 and will span several decades until its reflection into today’s reality. It’s a masterpiece of musicality, artistry and the collaborative effort of a cast from both theatre and film and a talented crew that has been preparing for an MTV style, historic and visually striking production piece.
Katips movie stars Jerome Ponce, Vince Tañada, Mon Confiado, Johnrey Rivas, Lou Veloso, Nicole Laurel Asensio, Adelle Ibarrientos, Sachzna Laparan, Joshua Bulot, Vean Olmedo, Carla Lim, Patricia Ismael, Dexter Doria, Afi Africa, OJ Arci, Ricky Brioso, Liam Tanare, Dindo Arroyo, JP Lopez, Bernard Laxa and Nelson Mendoza. Produced, directed and written by Vince Tañada, Pipo Cifra as musical director, Alejandro Ramos as Associate Director, OJ Arci as Line Producer, Domingo Almoete as Production Manager, Manuel Obanto as Director of Photography, Roland Rubenecia as Production Designer, Mark Jason Sucgang as Editor, Louis Perez as Continuity Director, Fidel Redado as Script Supervisor and Kris Manubay as Wardrobe incharge.
