#FoodPH - Nanyang, A Taste of Authentic Southeast Asian Comfort Food!
The Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant Nanyang is one success story that illustrated the challenges of remaining open year-round.
They currently have 14 branches across the country, and they're still expanding by opening more stores. On this blog, I am sharing you the dishes I tried during my visit at their SMDC Air Residences store in Makati.
Before we go to the main event, I just would like to share some trivia about Nanyang's history and the vision about it. Nanyang is the ideal example of how to combine a modern and nostalgic experience. Nanyang Kopi, one of its trademark drinks, has roots that go all the way back to the 1960s and 1970s. Putting a contemporary spin on the classic breakfast pairing of freshly toasted bread and a cup of Nanyang Kopi.
Nanyang at SMDC Air Residences is hard to miss because it's right in front the side entrance between Air Residences and Assembly Grounds. Since the store has faux plants on accent walls and a higher ceiling than the other Nanyang locations I visited, the furnishings are noticeably relaxing. When dining in, the atmosphere is still minimalistic, allowing you to concentrate on the dishes you will soon be trying.
Hainanese Kaya with Honey Traditional Toast Set |
First on the list is the Hainanese Kaya with Honey Traditional Toast Set priced at PhP 168.00. Each set comes with your choice of toast, 2 soft boiled eggs and Kopi or Teh. I first tried having this kind of meal when I explored Singapore way back 2010. I am very delighted as I am not used to eating soft boiled egg and haven't imagine that it can actually work with a toast. Aside from the Hainanese Kaya with Honey spread which made up of caramelized brown sugar with honey, you may also try Nonya Kaya which is green in color due to its pandan flavor.
Curry Chicken Rice |
Next on the line is the Curry Chicken Rice (PhP 248) with the perfect balance of creamy, slightly spicy and aromatic just how I like it. The Prawn Laksa (PhP 268) immediately comes next as it has a near taste notes with Curry Chicken Rice. Unlike other Laksa, Nanyang's version of this spicy soup base is flavored with coconut and topped with double cooked egg, prawns, and fishcake. The noodles, which are thick vermicelli cut into smaller pieces that can be slurped up with a spoon, are what make it distinctive.

Another dish that brings me back to my good memories of Singapore is the Hainanese Chicken (PhP 268). I ordered it in 2-ways. One fried and then the other, the usual. What makes it delightful is the tenderness of the meat as it's cooked perfectly. The sauces that comes with it made the umami flavors explode in every bite.

Going adventurous? Why not try their Homemade Nasi Lemak (PhP 248)which contains fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf served with sambal, fried crispy anchovies, toasted peanuts and cucumber. Cheese lover? Worry not as they have Cheesy Chicken Chop Noodle (Php 248) which best enjoyable while it's hot.

It's my first time to try their Mango Sago Pomelo (PhP 120) which reminded me of my favorite mango dessert shop in Hongkong. That dessert store had branches in the Philippines pre-pandemic but was affected by the crisis. Their Mngo Sago Pomelo is a great meal ender or palate cleanser in between dishes.

Overall, when it come to Southeast Asian food, Nanyang is always on top of my list. At it's price point, it touches different market segments and really a bang for one's buck. I'll never get tired of coming back!

Lastly, don't miss out on their congee! They prepare limited number of servings per day so you're a lucky one if you will have it during your visit.
Sharing you an IG real taken during my Nanyang visit!
