#CulturePH - A Cinematic Celebration: PELÍCULA Spanish Film Festival Delights Over 6,000 Viewers!
If you love films that transport you to different worlds and cultures, then you would have been thrilled by the 23rd edition of the PELÍCULA>Pelikula Spanish Film Festival! Organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila, this year’s festival was a smashing success, drawing in over 6,500 attendees to the Red Carpet Cinemas at Shangri-La Plaza from October 5 to 13, 2024.
The festival wrapped up with a bang, featuring back-to-back full-house screenings and an exciting awards ceremony. The coveted Premio del Público (Audience Choice Award) went to Dani de la Orden’s “Casa en llamas” (2024), a dark comedy that had everyone laughing and crying. This film, about a woman’s chaotic yet heartfelt attempt to reunite her family, has not only won several national awards but also became the highest-grossing Catalan film of all time. Talk about a must-watch!
But “Casa en llamas” wasn’t the only highlight. The festival showcased a diverse lineup of films that captivated audiences, including “El maestro que prometió el mar,” “Loli Tormenta,” “La llegada,” “Cerrar los ojos,” “Robot Dreams,” “Te estoy amando locamente,” “Puan,” “Pacarrete,” and “La estrella azul.” Each film brought unique stories and perspectives from Spain and Latin America, adding depth and richness to the festival.
One of the standout moments was the En Corto series, which provided a platform for short films and cultural interaction. Local filmmaker Kyla Romero presented her short film “Transients,” alongside other compelling shorts like “Aunque es de noche” by Guillermo García López (Spain), “Primetime Mother” by Sonny Calvento (Philippines), and “La sixtina” by Juan Camilo Fonnegra (Colombia). It was a beautiful showcase of the different facets of the human experience.
As we bid farewell to this year’s festival, we can already look forward to the 24th edition of PELÍCULA>PELIKULA, set for the first week of October 2025. Mark your calendars because it’s going to be another fantastic celebration of Spanish and Latin American cinema!
A big shoutout to the organizers and sponsors who made this event possible: Instituto Cervantes de Manila, Embajada de España en Filipinas, Shangri-La Plaza, Red Carpet Cinemas, and many more. Your support helps bring these incredible stories to life and enrich our cultural landscape.
