#TheaterPH - Ballet Manila’s “Florante at Laura”: A Symphony of Creativity and Ingenuity

Get ready to be swept off your feet because Ballet Manila is bringing a magical production to the stage that you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars for the world premiere of “Florante at Laura,” a ballet that promises to be a feast for the senses, combining the best of Filipino literature, music, and dance.

A Collaboration of Creative Masters

“Florante at Laura” is the brainchild of some of the country’s most esteemed artists. Ballet Manila’s creative director, Lisa Macuja Elizalde, couldn’t be more excited about this project. She shares, “Something magical happens when artists come together!”

This production is choreographed by Gerardo Francisco, Ballet Manila’s principal dancer and co-artistic associate, known for his award-winning work on “Ibong Adarna.” He’s joined by British choreographer Martin Lawrance, who previously wowed audiences with his innovative retelling of “Romeo and Juliet” in a Filipino setting. Their collaboration has been a harmonious blend of ideas and creativity.

Bringing the Story to Life

The libretto for “Florante at Laura” was crafted by renowned writer and balagtasan expert Professor Michael Coroza. And when it came to the music, Lisa had a dream come true when National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab agreed to compose the score. Ryan’s sweeping, dramatic, and romantic compositions are brought to life by the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth, conducted by his son, Toma Cayabyab.

A Visual Spectacle

The story of “Florante at Laura,” written by Francisco ‘Balagtas’ Baltasar in 1838, is a tale of love, betrayal, and redemption. To translate this epic narrative into stunning visuals, Ballet Manila enlisted the talents of set designer Mio Infante and costume designers Otto Hernandez and Therese Arroyo Hernandez. Their work ensures that every scene is not just a backdrop but a vital part of the storytelling.

Lighting director John Batalla adds another layer of magic with his distinct lighting color palette, transporting audiences to different times and places, enhancing the mood and themes of the production.

Don’t Miss It!

Ballet Manila is known for its excellence and artistry, and “Florante at Laura” is set to be another jewel in their crown. Performances will be held at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City on October 12, 13, and 19, 2024. For tickets, visit www.ticketworld.com.ph.
