#TheaterPH - Experience the Power of Greek Tragedy with Tanghalang Ateneo’s “Medea”
This November, Tanghalang Ateneo, the longest-running theater company at Ateneo de Manila University, invites you to witness a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and revenge with their latest production, “Medea.” Directed by Ron Capinding and translated into Filipino by National Artist for Literature and Theater Rolando S. Tinio, this adaptation of Euripides’s classic tragedy promises to be a powerful theatrical experience.
A Timeless Tale of Passion and Vengeance
“Medea” tells the story of a sorceress who is betrayed by her husband, Jason, after she helps him secure the Golden Fleece. When Jason abandons her for Creon’s daughter, Medea is banished but persuades Creon to give her one more day. In that time, she plots a chilling revenge, sending cursed gifts that lead to the deaths of the princess and Creon. The tragedy reaches its peak when Medea takes the ultimate step of vengeance by killing her own children, leaving Jason in utter ruin.
A Season of Eloquentia, Sapientia, Humanitas
This production is part of Tanghalang Ateneo’s 46th season, themed “Eloquentia, Sapientia, Humanitas” (Eloquence, Wisdom, Humanity). Artistic Director Guelan Varela-Luarca explains, “Ancient cultures, including the Greeks, believed in the physical power of words. In today’s practical and utilitarian world, we often forget this. Greek theater reminds us of the transformative power of language.”
A Stellar Cast and Creative Team
The production features a talented cast of seasoned actors, including Miren Alvarez-Fabregas as Medea, Yan Yuzon as Jason, and Joseph Dela Cruz as Egeo. The artistic team includes Ron Capinding (Direction), Tata Tuviera (Production Design), Zak Capinding (Sound Design), D Cortezano (Lighting Design), and Ara Fernando (Make-up).
