#CulturePH - Celebrating Two Decades of Harmony: FEU Chorale’s 20th Anniversary Concert Series

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Chorale is marking a significant milestone with a concert series titled “Dalawang Dekada: 20 Years in Harmony.” This celebration not only honors the 20th anniversary of the choir’s revival but also introduces their new Artistic Director, Mr. Roijin G. Suarez.

The series kicked off on November 9, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the FEU Auditorium. The concert was a musical journey through time, showcasing the evolution of choral music from the Renaissance period to the present day.

For those who missed the opening, there’s another chance to experience the magic. The FEU Chorale will perform a mini-concert on Saturday, November 16, from 6 to 8 PM at the FEU Chapel.

The revival of the FEU Chorale in 2004 was spearheaded by then FEU Chair Dr. Lourdes R. Montinola, under the FEU Center for the Arts. Since its revival, the choir has risen to prominence, winning numerous national competitions. Under the leadership of Emerson Hernandez (2004 - 2016), the choir performed on various television programs and even collaborated with the Philippine Madrigal Singers in a memorable concert at the FEU Auditorium in 2009.

From 2017 to 2023, Mr. Karl Angelo Tangco led the choir to international acclaim. They won their first international competition at the 4th Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival in 2019, securing First Prize in the Mixed Choir category and Second Prize in the Folk Song category. That same year, they also clinched First Prize at the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) Senior Choir Category. In 2023, the FEU Chorale continued their winning streak, earning 2nd Prize at the Sing! Tarlac! Sing! Choral Festival and Competition, and representing the Philippines at the Asia Choral Grand Prix in Bali, Indonesia. They also received an Ani Ng Dangal award for Music.

Currently, the choir is under the direction of Roijin Suarez, who took over in 2024. Suarez, a graduate of the University of the Philippines Los Baños with a degree in Electrical Engineering, is a multi-awarded choral conductor and clinician. His accolades include the Special Jury Prize for Most Promising Young Conductor at the 10th Orientale Concentus International Choral Festival in Singapore (2017) and the Most Promising Conductor - Special Jury Award at the 6th Tokyo International Choir Competition in 2024. In June 2024, he led the FEU Chorale to victory as the Grand Prix Champion at the 2nd Sing, Tarlac, Sing! Choral Festival and Competition.
