#CulturePH - Boehringer Ingelheim Marks the Holidays by Encouraging Filipinos to Get CheCKD

As the festive season kicks off in the Philippines, Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc., in partnership with Dialysis Philippines Support Group (Dialysis PH), Kidney Transplant Association of the Philippines (KITAP), and Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO), is bringing back the "It Starts With U: Get CheCKD" campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness about chronic kidney disease (CKD) and promote kidney health during the holiday season.

A Fun and Educational Experience

On November 30, 2024, the second leg of the "It Starts With U: Get CheCKD" campaign was held at Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque City. The event featured the return of the Check Your Choices Game Room, a life-sized board game designed to educate participants about kidney function and effective ways to maintain kidney health. This engaging and interactive experience combines fun with valuable health education.

The Importance of Kidney Health

The holiday season often leads to overindulgence in rich foods and alcohol, late nights, and increased stress. These factors can negatively impact kidney health, especially for those at risk of CKD. Chronic kidney disease is a leading cause of death in the Philippines and is closely linked to other health issues such as hypertension and diabetes. High blood pressure can strain the kidneys, while uncontrolled blood sugar from diabetes can damage blood vessels, further elevating the risk of CKD.

Educational Talks and Health Screenings

The event featured educational talks by nephrologists Dr. Rhodora Valenzona from Perpetual Help Medical Center Binan and Dr. Clifton Pe from the University of Sto. Tomas (USTH) and De Los Santos Medical Center. Attendees had the opportunity to learn directly from health experts about CKD and its connection to heart, kidney, and metabolic wellness. These talks empowered participants to make informed choices for a healthier holiday season and beyond.

Interactive Booths and Health Zones

New booths focused on heart health and type 2 diabetes were introduced at the event. Boehringer Ingelheim also featured their educational website, providing valuable information about CKD and related health conditions. The Health CheCKD Zone offered guests one-on-one consultations with doctors, who checked their vitals and provided free two-step kidney health screenings for those at risk.

Check Your Kidney Health

The simple two-step screening process for checking kidney health includes a creatinine test, which measures the waste product in the blood, and the urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) test, which measures protein levels in the urine. These tests help detect kidney function and identify potential issues early on.
