#TheaterPH - Experience the Magic of "Sintang Dalisay" at Ateneo de Manila University!

Get ready for an unforgettable experience as Areté, Ateneo de Manila University's creativity and innovation hub, teams up with Tanghalang Ateneo to bring you the much-anticipated restaging of "Sintang Dalisay." This Filipino adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is set to captivate audiences once again in February 2025.

A Timeless Tale with a Filipino Twist

Directed by the late Ricardo G. Abad and Guelan Varela-Luarca, "Sintang Dalisay" beautifully blends the classic love story of Romeo and Juliet with the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines. Set in an imagined Muslim community in the Southern Philippines, the story follows Rashiddin and Jamila as they navigate their secret love amidst a longstanding family feud. This adaptation combines Shakespeare's tragedy with the festive spirit and enduring hope of Filipino culture, brought to life through the Igal dance of the Sama-Bajau people and neo-ethnic and gamelan music.

A Tribute to a Theater Legend

This production is part of Tanghalang Ateneo's "ELOQUENTIA, SAPIENTIA, HUMANITAS: The Ricky Season," honoring the late theater veteran Dr. Ricardo G. Abad. First directed by Dr. Abad in 2011, "Sintang Dalisay" has received numerous accolades, including ALIW Awards for Best Non-Musical Production and Best Direction, and a Silver Medal at the 3rd International Experimental Theater Festival in Vietnam. The 2024 revival also earned four nominations at the BroadwayWorld Philippines Awards.

Meet the Talented Cast and Crew

The 2025 restaging features the return of Maliana Beran and Karl Borromeo as the star-crossed lovers, Jamila and Rashiddin. Joining them are an ensemble of talented members, alumni, and professional theater artists, including Jerome Dawis, Fred Layno, James Reyes, Yani Lopez, and many more. The artistic team boasts impressive names like Sabrina Basilio for dramaturgy, Matthew Santamaria for choreography, and Edru Abraham for music consultation.
