#TheaterPH - Ballet Manila Celebrates 30 Years with a Spectacular Season of Performances
Ballet Manila is turning 30, and like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better with age. This milestone anniversary is being celebrated with a series of breathtaking performances that promise to dazzle and delight audiences. The festivities are set to take place at the iconic Aliw Theater in Pasay City, featuring world-renowned ballet superstars from the US and Russia.
The Pearl Gala: A Night to Remember
Kicking off the celebration is The Pearl Gala on March 7, 2025, at 8 PM, with additional shows on March 8 and 9 at 5 PM. This gala is a collection of Ballet Manila's most exquisite pieces, including the world premiere of "Pearls," choreographed by the legendary Lisa Macuja Elizalde, along with Martin Lawrance and Gerardo Francisco Jr.
The gala opens with "Paquita," a piece that holds a special place in Ballet Manila's heart, having been performed during their very first concert 30 years ago. This performance is a testament to the company's enduring strength and quality, showcasing the talents of both soloists and the corps de ballet.
From the classical elegance of "Paquita," the gala transitions to "Bloom," a vibrant piece originally choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa in 2014. This performance highlights the diversity and strength of Ballet Manila, featuring a male-dominated corps de ballet – a unique twist in the ballet world.
The evening culminates with "Pearls," a ballet that beautifully parallels the development of a dancer to the formation of a pearl. Each dancer represents a unique jewel, trained for years to achieve effortless grace, much like a pearl that forms over time into a stunning gem.
Swan Lake: A Timeless Classic
Following The Pearl Gala, Ballet Manila continues the season with the timeless classic Swan Lake on May 30, 2025, at 8 PM, and on May 31 and June 1 at 5 PM. A special matinee on May 31 at 1 PM will feature principal dancer Abigail Oliveiro and San Francisco Ballet artist Nathaniel Remez in the lead roles.
Adding to the excitement, guest celebrity dancers from San Francisco Ballet, including soloist Katherine Barkman and principal dancer Esteban Hernandez, will grace the stage. Barkman, a former principal dancer with Ballet Manila, will perform the dual roles of Odette (White Swan) and Odile (Black Swan), alongside Hernandez.
Don Quixote: A Grand Finale
Closing the performance season is Don Quixote, featuring the return of Mariinsky Prima Ballerina Renata Shakirova. This ballet has become a signature piece for Ballet Manila, and for Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, it holds a special place as her signature role. Renata will showcase her incredible talent alongside Joshua Enciso, making his debut as Basilio.
"Don Quixote" is a joyous, high-energy ballet that promises to end the season on a high note. With its lively choreography and stunning performances, it's a celebration of ballet at its finest.
