#FitnessPH - The Secret Link Between Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease
This World Kidney Day, Boehringer Ingelheim is encouraging Filipinos to prioritize their kidney and heart health by managing blood pressure and getting checked for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
The Silent Threats: Hypertension and CKD
As we embrace the new year with fresh starts and healthier habits, it's crucial to address chronic health conditions like hypertension and CKD, which remain silent threats for millions of Filipinos. In 2022, hypertensive diseases were ranked as the fifth leading cause of death in the country1.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, occurs when blood pressure is persistently above normal. Various factors contribute to this condition, including being overweight, high intake of salt, alcohol, and coffee, lack of fruits and vegetables in the diet, insufficient exercise, smoking, and stress. Often dubbed the "silent killer," hypertension can go unnoticed due to the absence of early symptoms. However, it significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart complications, and surprisingly, CKD.
Understanding the Connection
According to Dr. Greta Cortez, Head of Medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim (Philippines), Inc., unmanaged hypertension can cause the arteries around the kidneys to narrow, weaken, or harden, preventing the kidneys from receiving essential oxygen and nutrients. This creates a cycle where extra fluid in the blood vessels raises blood pressure, leading to more damage and potentially ending in kidney failure.
CKD is one of the leading causes of death in the Philippines. The National Kidney Transplant Institute revealed that one Filipino develops chronic renal failure every hour, with an estimated 2.3 million Filipinos currently diagnosed with CKD. Projections indicate that one in 10 Filipinos will develop this deadly disease.
Practical Steps for a Healthier Life
Managing your blood pressure begins with small steps that can have significant effects. Regular physical activity, managing stress, and avoiding smoking are crucial. Transitioning to a well-balanced, heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while low in alcohol, salt, saturated fats, and added sugars, can also help.
Regular check-ups are essential to monitor your health. Seeing a healthcare professional can alert you to changes in your blood pressure and help you make necessary adjustments.
“Hypertension and CKD are life-threatening conditions that often go unnoticed – but early detection and proper management can save lives. At Boehringer, we aim to improve the lives of people living with interconnected cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CRM) diseases through innovative and people-centric solutions. One of the best ways is to get yourself checked,” added Dr. Cortez.
