#TheaterPH - Our Experience at Tanghalang Pilipino's "Kisapmata"

"Kisapmata" is a gripping psychological drama that delves into the dark and unsettling dynamics of a dysfunctional family. The story revolves around Dadong, a retired police officer, his submissive wife Dely, their daughter Mila, and her fiancé Noel. As the narrative unfolds, the audience is drawn into a web of control, fear, and manipulation, revealing the harrowing impact of Dadong's authoritarian rule over his family.

The Theater Experience

From the moment I stepped into the doors of Tanghalang Ignacio Jimenez (CCP Blackbox Theater), I was enveloped in an atmosphere of anticipation. The intimate setting of the Blackbox Theater added to the immersive experience, making every moment feel personal and intense. The show promptly started at 8 PM, and the minimalist stage design immediately caught my eye. The set resembled a part of a house, with a background of house walls and roofing, and visible grasses that suggested a house with no neighbors yet. This stark and simple design effectively set the tone for the play, emphasizing the isolation and claustrophobia experienced by the characters.

Characters and Performances

Portrayed with chilling precision, Dadong's character is the embodiment of control and intimidation. Jonathan Tadioan's performance was both unsettling and compelling, capturing the essence of a man who wields power through fear.

As Dadong's wife, Dely's portrayal was heart-wrenching. Lhorvie Nuevo-Tadioan's submissiveness and quiet suffering were palpable, making the audience empathize with her plight.

Toni Go-Yadao's Mila brought a sense of vulnerability and strength to her role. Her struggle to break free from her father's oppressive grip was portrayed with raw emotion.

Marco Viana's characterization as Noel provided a glimmer of hope and resistance. His interactions with Mila and confrontations with Dadong added layers of tension and drama to the narrative.

Technical Aspects

The production's use of projection, sound, and lighting was nothing short of brilliant. Each element was intelligently employed to enhance the storytelling:

Projection: The projections were used to create a sense of space and time, adding depth to the minimalist set. They also served to highlight the psychological turmoil of the characters.

Sound: The sound design was meticulously crafted to heighten the tension and unease. Every creak, whisper, and sudden noise contributed to the overall atmosphere of dread.

Lighting: The lighting was used to great effect, casting shadows and creating stark contrasts that mirrored the characters' inner conflicts. The interplay of light and darkness was symbolic of the themes of control and liberation.
