#TheaterPH - Papet Pasyon 2025: A Beloved Tradition Returns to CCP
This Lenten season, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas are bringing back a cherished tradition with Papet Pasyon 2025. Mark your calendars for April 6, 2025, as this beloved puppet play returns to its original home at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez, with performances at 2:30 PM and 6 PM.
A Timeless Story
Written by National Artist for Theater Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, Papet Pasyon 2025 beautifully narrates the significant moments of Holy Week. From Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to His resurrection on Easter Sunday, the play captures the essence of these events through the eyes of a young boy who received a miracle from Jesus. This unique storytelling approach, based on Biblical passages and Filipino traditions, makes the play a feast of culture and heritage.
A Celebration of Filipino Traditions
Papet Pasyon 2025 is more than just a play; it’s a celebration of Filipino traditions. This senakulo, a folk-religious theatrical retelling of Jesus Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection, features intricately crafted wooden puppets made by master woodcarvers from Paete, Laguna. The play has been a staple of Holy Week celebrations since its first staging at the CCP in 1985.
A Journey Through Time
Over the years, Papet Pasyon has been performed in various venues, including churches, schools, and other performing spaces in Metro Manila and Bulacan. It found a permanent home at the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Teatro Papet Museo in Quezon City in 2006. During the pandemic, Teatrong Mulat adapted by producing stage-to-film versions that were live-streamed on their official Facebook page. In 2023, the play was staged at the newly renovated Metropolitan Theater of Manila.
Marking a Milestone
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Papet Pasyon, and it’s returning to where it all began—the CCP. Directed by Teatrong Mulat artistic director Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete, the play has evolved over the years with updates to the text, puppets, and the incorporation of shadow play elements and voice-over recordings. Despite these changes, the play has remained true to its original vision: to present the senakulo through the art of puppetry, bringing the passion of Jesus Christ closer to new and younger generations.
The puppet play features a talented ensemble of puppeteers, including Bonifacio-Ramolete, Raymund Ramolete, Roel Ramolete, siglo, Arvy Dimaculangan, Shenn Apilado, Khen Del Prado, Nour Hooshmand, Mina Camacho, Janno Castillo, Hazelle Catena, Ayeesha Cuerpo, Anna Dalet, Ravelyn Dar Juan, Vinzar Rubi, Harvey Sallador, and V Soriano. Their vocal talents bring to life the different biblical characters, creating a truly immersive experience.
