#FitnessPH - Running for a Greener Future: The GCash Eco Run Plants Over 76,000 Trees
Imagine combining your love for running with a mission to save the planet. That’s exactly what happened at the first-ever GCash Eco Run, where over 12,000 eco-runners took to the streets of Ayala Avenue, Makati, not just to set personal records but to make a lasting impact on the environment. This incredible event, supported by various sustainability partners, has already resulted in the planting of over 76,000 trees in the Negros region.
A Race with a Purpose
The GCash Eco Run was more than just a race; it was an eco-movement. Each participant’s sign-up contributed to the planting of a grey stilted mangrove tree in Negros Occidental, thanks to the South Negros Reforestation Initiative—a partnership between Silliman University and GCash. GCash doubled the impact by pledging an additional tree for every participant, resulting in 24,000 new trees from the runners alone.
Why Mangroves Matter
Grey stilted mangroves are environmental superheroes. They mitigate the impacts of extreme weather, sequester carbon, and provide habitats for marine life. These forests are some of the most effective natural ecosystems for carbon storage, making them crucial in the fight against climate change.
Interactive Eco Booths and Sustainable Practices
The event also featured interactive booths by advocacy and sustainability partners, promoting eco-conscious living. Organizations like Berdeng Kalaw, Caritas Manila, Zolo, and Aling Tindera showcased their initiatives, from recycling to turning clothing donations into funds for scholars. Attendees explored eco-friendly products from merchants like Cut the Craft, Bukid ni Bogs, Wonderhome Naturals, Eco Shift, and Commune. They even got their GCash VISA cards made from 100% recycled plastic.
Continuing the Green Journey with GForest
GCash makes sustainable living easy and accessible through GForest. Every transaction on the GCash app, whether it’s cashing in, sending money, paying bills, or buying load, earns green energy points. These points can be redeemed to plant virtual trees, which GCash then transforms into actual trees planted in key areas around the country.
Join the Movement
“Much like how GForest turns virtual trees into actual ones, the GCash Eco Run brings together our community of Green Heroes, driven by a shared purpose to create real-world impact—one step, one tree, and one action at a time,” said CJ Alegre, GCash Head of Sustainability.
The GCash Eco Run is supported by corporate partners like IKEA Philippines, Globe AT HOME, Pay & Go, and eTap Solutions, who also pledged trees to strengthen Silliman University’s mangrove reforestation efforts.
