#MusicPH - A Jeffrey Ching Classic and Soloist Andrea Obiso in PPO Concert VII: FINALE
Get ready for an unforgettable evening of music as the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) masterfully closes its 40th concert season, dubbed Forte, with internationally acclaimed soloist Andrea Obiso and a new concerto from Jeffrey Ching. Mark your calendars for April 11, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati City.
A Night of Compelling Orchestral Works
Under the baton of Maestro Grzegorz Nowak, PPO Concert VII: Finale promises to be an evening filled with compelling orchestral works. The concert will commence with composer Jeffrey Ching’s “Concerto for Orchestra,” a newly commissioned work by the orchestra. Ching, the PPO’s first composer-in-residence, brings his unique blend of historical narratives and musical innovation to the stage.
Meet Jeffrey Ching
Jeffrey Ching studied music, Sinology, and Philosophy at Harvard, Cambridge, and London. He has served as composer-in-residence at various international music festivals and has written over 300 compositions. His opera “Das Waisenkind” won the Theater Erfurt Audience Prize in Germany and was nominated for the Kyoto Prize. Ching’s works seamlessly blend Eastern and Western traditions, creating a rich tapestry of sound.
Renowned Soloist Andrea Obiso
Italian violinist Andrea Obiso joins PPO Concert VII: Finale for a night of dreamy melodies. Since 2020, Obiso has served as Concertmaster of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He has performed with top orchestras worldwide and toured extensively across Europe, Asia, and the USA. Playing a Joseph Guarneri del Gesù violin crafted in 1741, Obiso carries 284 years of musical history with him in each performance.
Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3
For PPO Concert VII: Finale, Obiso will interpret Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Violin Concerto No. 3.” Saint-Saëns was 45 years old when he finished writing this composition, which integrates virtuosity in three parts and demonstrates refined musicality. The violin is immediately put into action with luminous writing, ascending to a solo recitative that perfectly sustains the orchestra’s momentum.
Bizet’s Carmen Suite
The concert continues with Georges Bizet’s “Carmen Suite,” derived from Bizet’s operatic masterpiece. This atmospheric composition includes five instrumental sections describing a gypsy woman and her fiery love for freedom. Bizet’s Carmen Suite closes the curtains of PPO Concert VII: Finale with its score bursting with passion.
A Remarkable Beginning
PPO Concert VII: Finale marks a remarkable beginning for the orchestra. The momentous closing of the orchestra’s 40th season brings another milestone as PPO gears up for a nine-concert tour in the United Kingdom in May.
